I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas...
Unlike Shirley Temple, it’s not because I was bad… just unlucky. But it was still very disappointing. So disappointing, that I almost didn’t look at the images I captured… But that’s the end of the story, let’s start at the beginning.
In August, I learned about meteor showers. I had some great success getting some images of meteors and the Milky Way. There are three major meteor showers during the year. In January you can see the Quadrantids, in August the Perseids, and in December the Geminids. I was very excited to go back out in December and see if I could get more shots of meteors. But the Milky Way wouldn’t be out so I would just have meteors. I was okay with that… for a while.
In early December I started to notice some online chatter about “the Christmas Comet.” That is not its real name though. It’s actually called Comet 46p/Wirtanen. Wirtanen comes into view roughly every five years. I’ve never seen a comet before, and so I decided I would try to capture some images. I also was so happy that it would be in the same part of the sky as the Geminids. My winter photography goal came into sight…
I was going to capture an image of Wirtanen with a meteor! Or so I thought…
It was December fourteenth when I headed up to my dark spot, north of Kansas City about thirty miles. I got there and was very quickly able to discern the location of Wirtanen. My plan was simple. Focus on the area of the Comet, and let the camera work. Surly a meteor would fly through the frame…
Now everyone who knows me knows that I like to go to bed early. That night wouldn’t be one of those nights. By the time I was frustrated enough to call it quits, it was nearly two am. During the four hours in the roughly forty degree weather I had seen several meteors… but NONE of them seemed to be where I had the camera pointed.
Needless to say, I was disappointed. I got home, uploaded some photos, and didn’t even look at them. However, the LORD had a lesson for me to learn in all of this.
“YOU turned my lament into dancing; YOU removed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,”
“A person's heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps.”
“Many plans are in a person’s heart, but the LORD’s decree will prevail.”
“ … You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.”
GOD is an amazing GOD and I need to remember how great HE is every day. I need to be joyous for the salvation HE has offered to me. I need to not make extravagant plans, and trust in HIM to accomplish what HE wants me to.
I captured several good images. I’m lucky that I was able to witness the awesomeness of HIS creation. I’m lucky to be able to study the night sky and share my knowledge. I hope you enjoy the images and maybe even learn a little something.
