Hello!

Welcome to my site. I take photos, and learn life lessons. I hope you are inspired by what you find.

Ezra 7:10

“Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the LORD, obey it, and teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.”

One of my goals with photography was to eventually have a photo published.  I know that it really doesn't mean much, since so many photos are out there and being seen every day.  However, having something in print has always just sounded cool to me.  My goal was reached in December of 2016, and then again in November of 2017.  Here are the stories.

Story #1

In mid-November of 2016, I received a large white envelope from Birds & Blooms.  Since it was about time for my subscription to run out, I figured it was simply a request to pay for my next year of service.  I put it in the look at later pile and let it sit.  My parents usually gave me a subscription for Christmas and I never really worried about renewing it.  Several days passed, and I decided I might as well open the envelope, just to see what it contained.  I pulled the contents out and sat them down in front of me, and my mouth hit the floor.  Right on top was a letter from an Editor that read "Congratulations and thank you for becoming part of the enclosed Birds & Blooms issue."

I immediately grabbed up the issue (December/January 2017) and started flipping through the pages to find out the details.  Right there, on the bottom right corner of page 33 was a photo of a Dark-eyed Junco with the story I had submitted about how I captured the image.  I'm glad that Sandy didn't have her video camera handy, because there may or may not have been some jumping up and down and dancing around the living room for a while.

Below is the image and the story that was printed with it.

"On New Year's Day I found some time to go outside and watch birds. As I sat on the porch, a few of them flew right up to the feeders hanging from the eave. This junco sat on a nearby branch for a while and let me snap away!"

Story #2

On September 30, 2017, I was doing a portrait session with my nephew.  We spent the morning at "The Square" in Independence.  We got several awesome shots and it was so much fun working with him.  After we had wrapped up the shoot, I headed home.  The mail had arrived, and there again was a white envelope from Birds & Blooms.  Having received and envelope just like this about a year ago, I opened it as I sat in the driveway waiting for Tristan and Sandy to come out (we were headed to one of his baseball games).

Again I was greeted with a letter.  The letter was nearly word for word the same, but it was still exciting to read.  I opened up the issue (November 2017 of EXTRA) and thumbed through looking for the image.  I was even more excited about this publishing.  My image of a House Finch took up nearly half of page 22.

Below is the image and the story that was printed with it.

"I love how the visitors at my feeding station change with the seasons. Each year, I can't wait to see which birds show up as fall transitions to winter. This is one of the first House Finches I spotted last year."

Being published has meant so much to me.  I love that other people can enjoy my photography as much as I do.  I love sharing what I have captured and being able to share with millions of people, not just the few (but important) ones that follow my little Facebook and Instagram pages.  Being published also pushes me to continue to try to capture the best images possible.  It may never happen again, but if it does, I'm sure it will feel every bit as good as that first time.

On a side note, I love Birds & Blooms magazine and highly recommend it to everyone.  You will learn a lot.  I enjoy every issue I get from them, whether my photos are included or not.
