Hello!

Welcome to my site. I take photos, and learn life lessons. I hope you are inspired by what you find.

Ezra 7:10

“Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the LORD, obey it, and teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.”

Put Me In Coach...

... I'm ready to play.

Every year, my nephew sells Kansas City Royals vouchers, and many years we fail to use them all by the end of the season.  This year was no exception.  So as September rolled around, we made a conscience decision to go to one more Royals game.  We looked over the calendar, and picked the last home game of the season.  Wow... was that a bad choice!

For all of you that follow the Royals like us, this was the last game that the core of the 2015 World Championship would play together as Royals.  As I look back now, it was a great run, and I'll never forget this group of players.  Here are some of the images from that game, and my thoughts about them. (I hope I can get through this post without crying...)

(Update:  I DIDN'T)

I love the antics that Slugger brings to the games. From the dancing, to the pranks, to the t-shirt and hot dog tosses... He makes the games fun. I also love the time he takes with the kids at the ballpark. Is there any surprise that he will be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame? Congratulations Slugger!

Mike Moustakas is my all time favorite Royal. I love everything about his game. His defense... His hitting... His attitude... His hustle... I wasn't surprised at all when he was awarded "Comeback Player of the Year" for 2017. In the top of the first, he turned to the stands and tipped his hat, knowing that this would probably be his last game as a Royal. I love how I was in just the right place to make it appear he was looking right at me!

Jason Vargas has been a very important part of this organization for the last 4 years, and 2017 was the best. Vargas won 18 games as a starter for the Royals in 2017 and I was pleased to watch him pitch his last game as a Royal. It didn't go as well as planned, lasting only 4 innings and giving up 6 earned runs, but it was fun to watch him anyway.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Eric Hosmer was the third batter. I am so blessed to have been able to capture this moment. After a called first strike, and a swinging second strike, Hosmer connected with this pitch to hit a home run into the left field corner. To say the crowd went crazy would be an understatement! Hosmer's season of hitting earned him the 2017 Silver Slugger Award.

Moustakas was batting fourth in this game, and was up after Hosmer hit his home run. He again tipped his hat (helmet) and looked right at me. Sadly he batted two times in this game and didn't reach base. In this at bat, he grounded out to second base.

A close second for me in my all-time list of favorite Royals is Eric Hosmer. What an amazing ball player, and leader. He took this team on his shoulders and led them to a World Series Championship. Here he shows some of the defensive skills that have won him 4 Gold Gloves so far in his career.

Alex Gordon... how could you not like the way this guy plays baseball? Here he catches a flyball in the second inning. He makes so many amazing defensive plays. Is there any surprise that he has won 2 Defensive Player of the Year awards, 5 Golden Glove awards, and 1 Platinum Glove award? I think not. I can hardly wait to see the amazing things he'll do in 2018!

In the bottom of the second inning, Alcides Escobar came to bat for the first time. Just like the other players playing their final Royals game, he took the time to tip his helmet to the crowd. I love his defense, but his hitting could use some work. In this at bat he would strike out swinging.

I the bottom of the second inning, Alex Gordon hit this soft liner to first base. I love his defense, but wish that his offense could be more consistent.

In the top of the third inning, Escobar flashed some of his amazing defense. After diving to his right to field a ground ball, he throws to Whit Merrifield at second.

After Whit Merrifield recieved the ball from Alcides Escobar in the third inning, he executes a perfect pickle play. Whit is a fun player to watch and is always hustling.

The end of the pickle was Mike Moustakas tagging out the Diamondbacks runner. One of the things that made the Royals so much fun to watch the last few years was their commitment to defense. The images in this series are a great way to remember that!

In the top of the fourth inning, I got to see a play that I will remember forever. It's likely that it will never happen again. The first half of the play was Mike Moustakas fielding a ground ball from J.D. Martinez...

... The second half of the play was the throw to Eric Hosmer. A simple, routine play, that we became so accustomed to. This pair of corner infielders will be missed.

Like I mentioned earlier, I was lucky enough to see my favorite player bat twice in this game. Here is Mike Moustakas flying out to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Alex Gordon lined out to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. We were tied at this point of the game, and there were runners on first and second. It was looking like we might take the lead. Sadly, two batters later, with the bases loaded, Lorenzo Cain grounded into a fielders choice.

With one out in the top of the fifth inning came the moment we all knew was coming, but no one wanted to see. Ned Yost made the dreaded defensive substitution for the four, soon to be free agents. There wasn't a dry eye in the stadium as the met near second base, and hugged each other. Just looking at this image and typing these words have brought back all the tears to this Royals fan.

Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain, and Escobar walk off the field together. One. Last. Time.

After the game was over (and to be honest I don't even remember what happened since pretty much the entire starting lineup was taken out after the fifth inning), the entire team came back out onto the field to watch a presentation on the jumbotron.

He're is the entire team watching the tribute to Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain, and Escobar. It was amazing. Pictures and videos of them from the first moment they got to the majors, to the World Series, and even to this year. What a moment.

One final shot, as they turned to leave. I'll miss these two!
