… I'll go!
Song: Send Me by Lecrae
On June 21st, I again found myself photographing the fireworks after the Kansas City Royals game. I was by myself this time, but I wasn’t…
My family was gone at a baseball tournament. I was left home alone due to a wedding I had to photograph the next day. To keep myself occupied, I decided that I would work on some firework photography. I left my house during the 7th inning and arrived at the area Sandy and I had ventured to a couple weeks earlier during the 8th inning. By the time I arrived, there were several other people there.
Those who know me best know that… sadly… I don’t really like people. I would much rather just be by myself than engage with others, especially others that I don’t know. However, GOD expects more of me. In Matthew he tells me that I need to get out and share about HIM.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER and of the SON and of the HOLY SPIRIT, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
So, I was in a predicament. One that I often find myself in. Wanting to be alone, but surrounded by others, and GOD wanting me to reach out to them. To share with them. To be an example to them. To lead them to HIM. To show HIS love to them.
There is a famous quote by William J Toms that reads as follows: “Be careful how you live. You may be the only BIBLE some person ever reads.” One way that I can share GOD with those around me is to live my life according to his will. When others can see in me the GOD I serve, it can inspire them to seek HIM also.
1 Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise your youth; instead, you should be an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your FATHER in heaven.
GOD’s love is amazing, as I discussed in the last blog also. So, if I’m in the world with other people, I should be sharing GOD’s love with them. There is a great story in Luke about this. Even people outside of the church have probably heard about it. It convicts me to share GOD’s love and be and example that leads others to CHRIST.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the law?” He asked him. “How do you read it?”
Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
“You’ve answered correctly,” JESUS told him. “Do this and you will live.”
But wanting to justify himself, he asked JESUS, “And who is my neighbor?”
JESUS took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’
“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
“The one who showed mercy to him,” he said.
Then JESUS told him, “Go and do the same.”
Who’s my neighbor… everyone. Even those that were with me at the firework show. We shared in a common experience, but I wish I would have shared with them a better experience. A life with CHRIST. Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t unfriendly to them. We talked pleasantries, and shared some stories. However, I didn’t share with them what really matters. I wasn’t a very good neighbor.
Hopefully next time I get to observe an amazing fireworks show with my neighbors, I’ll share with them a way to a much more amazing show. Read the chapter below, and try to not be excited about it!
